This report seeks to study whether or not food waste can be reduced in the Danish households with a technological design, a smartphone application, as an aid. This study is based on theories about food waste impacts on natural sources and the major impact it has on the economy. The study seeks to find the specific target group for our smartphone application. With help from reports from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency the study will analyze food waste of the Danish people, the waste hierarchy and existing initiatives related to food waste.
The development of the technological design in this study is based on the 8 stages in the Soft System Method model and a prototype of the smartphone application is created. We will justify and optimize the application through analysis and evaluations with consumers through tests and interviews to create the best design. Through the theoretical and methodical choices made in this report, we found the elements that should be a part of the application. Furthermore the application seeks to inform users of the critical consequences on our planet due to food waste, as well as what the users can do to prevent their food waste. The issues concerning food waste can only be solved by humans, but through technology it will become easier.
