Kulbanekvarteret is a socially deprived area in Copenhagen. This thesis examines the implications of participatory planning in this area using action research as a methodical approach. I start out by reflecting on my internship and the organizational structure at Områdefornyelsen Kulbanekvarteret to clarify the extent of the projects done here. Ungeparlamentet is one of the more interesting projects involving young people from a local school. This acts as the empirical foundation of the analysis. A literature review is conducted with the aim of mapping relevant notions in the field, comprising performative urbanism and aestheticization processes. The study seeks to investigate the general need for participatory design and the aesthetics that lies within it. The conclusion is that Ungeparlamentet uses performative and empowering methods that can be employed more generally on other projects.
