This study examines how the meeting with a different culture and the psychological unknown in the subject is portrayed, in the literary work Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The work is analyzed by three different theoretical angles: literary analysis, culture analysis and psychoanalysis. These different perspectives represent three different approaches to the work, and therefore three different interpretations. These perceptions culminates in a discussion dealing with the role, the chosen theory of analysis plays in the interpretation of the work. The projects conclusive remark states that a given interpretation depends on what theory is chosen for analysis. If the topic is examined using more than one theoretical perspective, a more complex understanding of the work can be gained. The relevance of the theories consist in them being a tool thats, with given assumptions, is able to describe complex and abstract concepts in a systematic way, thus making it possible to discuss and understand these concepts. A theory is centered on its own terminology and subject area why a theoretical analysis often will seek to confirm its own dogma rather than relate to a larger truth.
