Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project seeks to address the meat consumption of young danish males, by examining the cultural norms and assumptions concerning the topic, as this demographic group, has the highest meat consumption within the Danish population. The object under investigation is problematized from the presuppositions of meat consumption having a high degree of negative consequences on the climate, eventually posing a big factor in terms of generating the present climate changes. The project seeks to explain how young men’s high level of meat consumption is constituted from a social scientific point of view. Hence, the investigation will seek to map out, and shed light upon the underlying social structures and mechanisms, which establishes young Danish males preference and taste, regarding meat. The concepts of preference and taste is understood from the theoretical perspectives of Bourdieu and Bauman, in order to clarify how young men influence each others practices and perceptions in relation to meat, and moreover, how this correlate with the unsettled and constantly (inter)changing social structures of late-modernity. With the use of Bourdieus theoretical concept of ‘masculine dominans’, the project will examine to which degree masculinity and masculine culture has its implications on young men’s meat consumption. The operationalization of the theoretical concept; the ‘political consumer’, will help to examine whether the demographic group addressed in the project, reflects consciously on their meat consumption, and whether these reflections influence their consumption-patterns. Thus, the project will seek to understand how the young males identify with their meat consumption, and whether they construct their identity through this. Finally the findings of the analysis is discussed in relation to an ethical angle on the problematic of the western world’s high meat consumption
