Abstrakt

This paper wishes to answer the question of whether or not the so-called ’new radio montage’ should in fact be described as new. This is done by first analyzing the Danish radio montage Kvinden på Isen, and then comparing it to third party analyses of two different radio montages from the 1980s. The theoretical basis on which our analysis is based consists of five different aspects all relevant to understanding the ‘new radio montage’. Firstly the article Det imaginære rum written by Ib Poulsen, secondly Radioæstetik og analysemetode by Hanne Bruun and Kirsten Frandsen, also Gerárd Genettes theory on focalization including Charles Sanders Peirce theory on semiotics and finally Peter Harms Larsen’s book Faktion som udtryksmiddel . By virtue of the analysis it is evident that Kvinden på Isen creates two very different imaginary settings in the mind of the listener. The first setting is characterized by the narrator’s attempt to discover the true story behind the death of the Danish nurse, Karen Roos, who in 1933 disappeared on Greenland. The acoustic staging regarding Houd’s journey leads the listener to believe that the radio montage should be heard as factual. The other setting however tells the story of Karen Roos and her diary and here the listener is lead to believe that the story should be interpreted as fiction since Houd herself narrates the diary. Considering the two settings as one radio montage, the story can only be described as faction. To answer the question regarding ‘the new Danish radio montage’ we compared our analysis to radio analyses on Knust kværn og kvæstet (1985) and Notater fra en losseplads (1987). In comparison, it became clear how the new radio montage should be described as both similar and different from previous radio montages since it is a hybrid of what defines the previous two. It is new in the sense that the new radio montage uses the narrator as a starting point for its use of faction. But similar in the sense that the so-called new radio montage use many of the conventional means that the radio montages of the 1980s does and therefore can be considered simply a development of the radio of the past.
