This master thesis about psychology of organizations is an investigation based on our interest to find out of which psychodynamic processes that are present in employees, when they are told to play in a work related context. The aim of the thesis is to answer the question: Which psychological processes are at play in the meeting between the organization and play, when play is brought in as a technology? We answer the research question by a selection of theory based on play together with empirical data consisting of interviews and documents (a magazine from Odense Kommune and relevant mail correspondence). The psychological conditions are brought to the surface in the light of the psychodynamic systemic theory where the psychoanalyst Donald W. Winnicotts thoughts about the potential space are central. “Serious Play” is one of the terms that are often brought forward when play is talked about in an organizational context. In our view is the term Serious Play an attempt to break down the ineluctable dichotomy that exits in play. Play is on one side creative, innovative and emancipatory. On the other side it is infantile and unproductive. The dichotomy in the discourse about play leads to doublebinding by the employees, who are locked between the serious and unserious, when they are playing at work. It has been crucial for us to illuminate the meaning of play by categorizing play activities by their main task. The thesis concludes that it is hard to use play as a technology in organizations. Despite the potentials of play there is a big risk that it will produce a high level of anxiety amongst the employees. The employees will the deploy some social defense mechanisms, that will block any progression towards the main task. This thesis points our that the main task of the play facilitator is to maintain a balance between the rational and the irrational in the play, so that the purpose of the play isn’t affected by unnecessary defense mechanisms.
