Language in Dystopian Novels

Valentina Munteanu & Angela Drakul

Studenteropgave: Fagmodulprojekt

In this project we are looking into ‘Newspeak’ and ‘Nadsat’ constructed fictional languages of dystopian novels: 1984 by George Orwell and A clockwork orange by Anthony Burgess.
We are doing so while using the Bilingualism theory, Code mixing and theories of language and power, Hermeneutical injustice and Foucault discourse analysis. We attempt to explain the terms such as dystopia, constructed and mixed languages and Orwellianism.
After a thorough analysis of the languages we end up understanding what is the purpose behind them, how are they mutually connected and how and why are they important in the contemporary society.
