The aim of this case study is to investigate how Grundtvigs Højskole in Hillerød, can be used as a method to improve integration of refugees in Denmark and as a model to implement integration measures more broadly. Additionally, the study will explore the challenges associated with integration of refugees at Grundtvigs Højskole. To investigate the latter, we conducted a field study at the school and several interviews including a teacher, a former refugee student and also a social worker from Hillerød Municipality who is the contact person on the refugees. We used Interactionism as our main theory of science and this is demonstrated in the way we collected our empirical data. Due to this theory of science interaction between people was in center of attention. As an impact of Interactionism, the empirical data directs us towards relevant theories that will be put into use in a theoretical analytic discussion.
On basis of the analysis, Grundtvigs Højskole appears to be enhancing integration in particular ways; the refugees improve their language proficiency during their stay and they also develop a social network. However, there is a risk of losing this network at the end of their stay at Grundtvigs Højskole due to the refugee’s remaining language constraints and potential geographical difficulties in maintaining connections with their Danish friends afterwards.
Furthermore we discuss our field observations and output of the analysis through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu’s and Robert D. Putnam’s theory. Bourdieu addresses an issue on cultural-, social- and economical capital and habitus, whereas Putnam is engaged in social capital and network on a general level of society. We find that refugees can increase their social and cultural capital at Grundtvigs Højskole, but they might experience difficulties with the language and a divided habitus. We also find that Grundtvigs Højskole provides promising possibilities for the refugees to build bridging social capital, which can result in a higher level of social capital in society from a wider perspective in general.
