With this project, we seek to bring a further understanding of the existential crises that a human, and more specifically an artist, might experience in his or her lifetime. Furthermore, this study will look at the works of the artist, and how these forms of crises might affect the works, and vice versa. The empirical work and artist we will be studying is the Danish film-director Lars von Trier, and his film from 2011, Melancholia. It is not possible to conclude upon the omnipresence of the existential crises in all manifestations of artworks, due to the limitations of the empery. But via the theoretical analyses of Lars von Triers biography and the movie, Melancholia, it is possible to conclude that in this specific example of Lars von Triers, Melancholia, an existential crisis was a prerequisite for the artistic creation.
