This paper examines which conditions are required in order to attain an optimal understanding of art and how the dissemination of the piece of art can facilitate a greater understanding. This is done by interviewing and examining the art understanding of a select number of visitors at Louisiana museum of modern art, as well as an interview with the curator of the exhibition. After the analysis is done the project is going to compare the understanding of the visitors to that of the curator. The analysis is done with the use of Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi and Rick E. Robinson’s theory of the four dimensions of art experience and Michael Parsons theory of aesthetic experience. The project has used Amedeo Giorgi’s phenomenological approach in the analysis of the transcribed interviews as to analyze their understanding based on the informants’ own descriptions. The findings in this project is, that background knowledge is a prerequisite for complex art understanding, as well as well-developed cognitive functions. Therefore, mental capacity and cognitive functions are important elements in developing an understanding of art.
