This thesis investigates the distinctive challenges connected to managing art institutions where a tension between art and administrative management is proposed. In order to shed light on the existence of such conflicting values our analysis consists in case studies of Theatre GROB and Aarhus Theatre - two art institutions whom have chosen to split the management in respectively an art manager and an executory manager. Our analysis method is based on ‘On Justification’ By Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot which allow us to identify the manager use of different justifications in their leader practise and moreover the tensions and compromises between the discrepancies of such justifications. The results of the analysis reveal plural values within the art institutions and certain values seems to be connected to the art manager where other values seem to activated by the executory manager resulting in a lack of shared vision for the art institution. With the introduction of theory underscoring the dialectic relation between knowledge and practice we query the need for such division between artistic and managerial values and conclusively propose fusion of such values under a shared vision for the future of the art institutions.
