In this paper we will seek to understand and problematize different aspects of crowdfunding. In order to understand how crowdfunding works, we will investigate how the arrival of modern information-technologies have changed the way products and ideas spread across the ever evolving interconnected society, and how crowdfunding will flourish under these circumstances. Furthermore we will describe how the choices of the individuals in modern society, can be understood through the work of Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman in his book Liquid Modernity. This is done in an attempt to understand the underlying motives of individuals deciding to contribute to crowdfundingcampaigns. The paper includes an analysis of recent theories by Yann Moulier Boutang in the field of socio-economics, by which we will describe the developments in collaborative innovation and what Moulier Boutang calls cognitive capitalism. In order to test our findings in the real world, we started our own crowdfunding experiment on the danish crowdfunding platform Booomerang.dk, in which we utilize our knowledge gained from the aforementioned theories. Our experiences with the experiment are included as well.
