This research paper examines how M.I.A. works in between the domains of art and politics. To contribute to the examination of this, Jacques Rancières theory ‘the distribution of the sensible’ is used to analyse a few select productions of M.I.A. We analyze whether her art can create a possible ‘redistribution of the sensible’ or it will stay as a pictorial presentation of a possible change. Furthermore Nikos Papastergiadis with his description of ‘cosmopolitanism’ will be brought in, to set the framework for the analysis of M.I.A.’s productions. We will argue, that M.I.A. uses ‘New Media’ as a way to promote her political messages through not only quotes from famous political people, but through several different types of pictures. These pictures are always loaded with political messages, which followers of her Instagram or Twitter can translate in his or her own way. The followers play an important role in sensemaking in relation to her pictures and political messages. We come to conclude that the followers and M.I.A. uses these ‘New Media’ as way of sharing political opinions but in several cases the comments are more about sharing feelings or rude comments than actually coming together and creating a possible change through a ‘redistribution of the sensible’.
