Kulturstrøget - en kulturel kortlægning med borgeren i centrum

Abstrakt

This thesis examines how a segment of the citizens in Roskilde perceive and experience Kulturstrøget – a project, which both involve physical planning and cultural elements such as heritage, experiences and stories. With Kulturstrøget the municipality wishes to generate a fuller and better urban life in the city centre. At the same time the actors in Kulturstrøget wish to offer cultural experiences for all citizens. With this focus of both Kulturstrøget and the thesis, the examination is characterized within the field of cultural planning. Cultural planning is still unexplored why the thesis functions as an exploration hereof. The citizens’ knowledge, needs, and opinions have been non-existing in Kulturstrøget and with an unsatisfied attendance from the citizens at the cultural events I have found it relevant to examine what the citizens perceive and wants of Kulturstrøget. The aim with this examination was to develop a number of recommendations for the future development of Kulturstrøget. To make this examination I have used the experience matrix method with walk-along, which makes it possible to achieve knowledge about the citizens’ experience of Kulturstrøgets five outdoor experience spaces in accordance to the five matrixes: culture, physical characteristics, experiences, stories and Kulturstrøget as an overall destination. In light of this the examination can be seen as a cultural mapping of Kulturstrøget, which is an important element of cultural planning. The cultural mapping has been accomplished with nine participants – seven citizens and two actors from Kulturstrøget. The thesis found that the experience of Kulturstrøget is framed by two cultural perceptions – a historical and a creative. Kulturstrøget is dominated by the historical element and therefore also needs to embody the creative element. Also, the experience of Kulturstrøget is generally characterized by an unexploited potential. Furthermore the experience of the areas’ rich heritage is based on a prior knowledge, which in many cases prevents an actual experience and makes Kulturstrøget appear high cultural. Therefore the immaterial stories about the heritage can be used directly to provide the knowledge for an educative and entertaining experience. This would at the same time make Kulturstrøget low cultural, which is necessary in making cultural experiences for all citizen, why this is one of the recommendations. Another recommendation is to make experience zones through Kulturstrøget as this can meet different needs in different spaces. Physically Kulturstrøget needs to provide better opportunities for optional visits where the aspects of safety and pleasure have been incorporated. Concerning the exploration of cultural planning, the thesis states four general conclusions about the possibilities, restrictions and potentials hereof. One conclusion is that the experience matrix method is usable for a cultural mapping as the matrixes can be constructed for the specific case. The matrix method can profitably be combined with walk-along, which gives the richest material.
