Due to the massive conflicts occurring in the Middle East and the African countries, the number of refugees in Denmark are radically increasing. This subject is highly discussed in the media and concerns both the politicians and the Danish citizens. Almost every Dane has an opinion, on how the refugees affects Denmark - some citizens are worried while other citizens focus on the added cultural diversity.
This project will examine this issue, through an analysis and discussion of the documentary ‘Da krigen kom til Toftlund’, produced by the tax funded company DR (Danmarks Radio). The documentary’s main concern is the cultural encounter between the Danish citizens of Toftlund and the Syrian refugees. The documentary represents both the Dane’s and the refugees’s perspective on the cultural encounter between them. The focus in this project, is to examine the responsibilities and issues of representing others, how the cast of the documentary positions themselves, and how DR positions the cast of the documentary in a role or character within the documentary. Furthermore this project examines ethical issues within the documentary. In addition to this, we are going to evaluate if the documentary complies with DR’s ethical guidelines for making TV and radio productions.
To make this comparison and discussion, we made five different interviews, four with the main cast of the Danish citizens in Toftlund and the last interview with the producer of the documentary, Lisbeth Dilling.
The project has five parts – a presentation of the chosen theory and theorists, an analysis of the positioning and representation within the documentary ‘Da krigen kom til Toftlund’, an analysis of ethical issues in the documentary, and an analysis of the interviews which will be used to evaluate whether the documentary complies with DR’s ethical and political guidelines. The last part will reflect on how we could have examined the issue of cultural encounters, and how we could have been inspired by other projects within the same area.
Finally, we can conclude, that the documentary portrays a positive development of the cultural encounter between the Danish citizens and the Syrian refugees in Toftlund. This is expressed through the presentation, positioning and representation analysis of the cast.
