The purpose of this paper is to examine the stylistic work of Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by analyzing it as a road movie based on the conventions of the genre. Furthermore there will be an analysis of the external and internal journey of the Whitman brothers. These main characters are driven by various internal conflicts, which manifests in their escape from their current situation. The themes for the analysis are chosen based on their importance in relation to the internal development of the main characters, which is shown with visual expressions in the movie. By using the theories of nostalgia, alienation and heterotopias the paper seeks to illustrate the brothers’ journey. Heterotopias are used in this project to conceptualize the physical manifestation of the external journey as a setting for the theories of alienation and nostalgia. The journey presented in road movies often use transport means such as vehicles, motorcycles, but in Wes Anderson's case a train is utilized. This choice of transportation is a deviation from the traditional road movie genre characteristics. The physical journey often portrays the personal or the internal development of the characters in the road movie genre. This project will examine the movement and placement of the main characters' development and how the traditional traits differ from other road movies. Furthermore the paper seeks to examine the distinctive auteur style of Wes Anderson and what he adds to the film stylistically. In addition to the analysis, the paper will discuss if The Darjeeling Limited fits into the definition of the road movie genre and what tendencies it reflects upon the main characters’ current culture. The paper concludes that The Darjeeling Limited can be defined as a road movie despite its deviations from the traditional road movie characteristics. Furthermore the paper concludes that nostalgia is a consistent aspect of the theme: the external and internal journey. The train is a represention of the order and structure, that the brothers need in the start of their journey, but after the train derails, so do the brothers. This chaos is what drives the plot and the internal development of the main characters forward.
