Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

In this assignment, an examination of the dynamics and history of representation is conducted and applied over Hollywood media in an effort to understand the consequences of cultural appropria-tion or, as it is known in Hollywood: ‘whitewashing’. In a world where media spans the entire globe, it is important to understand the effects of seeing oneself in the world and the consequenc-es of, in some cases, not being represented at all. Using various theorists and relevant articles, we analyze two Hollywood movies both accused of ‘whitewashing’: Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014) and Death Note (2017) in order to see how and if cultural appropriation has affected the film and its viewers. The analysis focuses on the historical origins and modern-day implications of cultural appropriation, along with reasons as to why it is so prevalent. In the discussion, different viewpo-ints are considered.
