Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

The report at your current disposal seeks to give a critical perspective on the monumental work "The New Spirit of Capitalism" written by the two French social scientists Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello, first published in english in 2005. The book gives both a both insightful understanding of the dynamics of capitalism as well as a novel thesis about the role of critique in society. In this day in age as the financial and economic structures of the world is in a major crisis, today would seem like the right moment to dig into what the structures of capitalism are composed of. The theoretical influence of both Karl Marx and Max Weber is apparent throughout the history of theories of capitalism, which is why a more profound knowledge of their theories were found necessary in order fully to grasp the complete meaning if "The New Spirit of Capitalism". The report argues that although the book is convincing in its analysis of contemporary society, there are several shortcomings which can briefly be outlined as follows: Methodological inconsistency, one sided focus on critique and problems with generalisation.
