This project aims to investigate BP’s crisis management through social media during and after the oil spill from Deepwater Horizon. The project aims to gain an insight into how BP has handled the crisis situation by using Facebook and YouTube. The project will provide an insight in the crisis strategies, that have been used because of the largest environmental disaster ever, and how the new medias such as Facebook and YouTube can be used in this context. A crisis situation leads to a weakening of the company’s image, why it is necessary to protect and restore this. To investigate this the theories of crisis communication and crisis management by William Benoit, Timothy Coombs and Frandsen & Johansen’s rhetorical arena will be used.
