Abstrakt

This report examines to which extent war neurosis and war experience plays a role in the two art movements Dada and Neue Sachlichkeit in the Weimar Republic in Germany in the aftermath of First World War. With war experience as a leitmotif am I seeking to study the war’s impact on the society as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and George Grosz picture it in their paintings. Thus operates this report in an interdisciplinary border area between cultural history and art history in a period marked by the transition to modernity and a breakthrough on the art scene, that kick-started the the 20th century. By examine the paintings in the analysis, I find it plausible to conclude that the war experience and to some extent war neurosis have had an impact on Dada and Neue Sachlichkeit – and Beckmann, Dix and Grosz in particular.
