This study arises from our interest in the complexity of modern Hollywoodfilms. The study investigates the phenomenon of complex storytelling in the time period from the nineteen nineties and forward. From the theory of David Bordwell's definition of classical film and art-cinema narration (1985), we try to get a feeling of the similarities and differences between the two different categories. In the analysis, we try to investigate the films Requiem for a Dream and Adaptation from the two different complex storytelling theories, multi-protagonist and metatextuality. While watching a film, we try to peek into the characters' minds, and strive to connect with them on different levels. In the study, we try to consider the method of comparative analysis and how to classify the complex storytelling in general. In conclusion, this phenomenon will be evolving continually. This is interesting, because it makes it difficult to agree on which theory is best used, and which is best left discarded.
