This study examines how solidarity is communicated through the videos: Du kan hjælpe børn som Tuhafeni, Plan Danmark præsenterer Søren - En rigtig helt! and Vi bliver, når kameraerne slukker which are released by different charities. Furthermore we examine what influence this communication provides in a larger context. This study consist of a theoretical part based on Lilie Chouliaraki’s theory about the ironic spectator of vulnerable others. This part helps us to analyse and discuss how the communication of solidarity is expressed in our chosen videos. With this knowledge we conclude that all Chouliaraki’s types of appeals are present in today’s post-humanitarian community. Furthermore the videos are affected by the transformations: the instrumentalization of the aid and development field, the retreat of the ´grand narratives´ of solidarity and the increasing technologization of communication. In the study we discuss the power relationship between the West and the global south, to which we conclude that the videos from charities contributes to reproduce this unequal relationship.
