Studenteropgave: Speciale

This project is based on a case study carried out in the period February to May 2013 in the cookery school in the closed state prison Vridsløselille. It includes all the inmates who were on the cookery school in the period and the chefs and the staff who were there at the given time of observation. The purpose of our thesis is to research the institutional influences that are inserted when taking a training course under these special conditions, being in prison - a “total institution” - as collaboration between a vocational school outside the prison and with teachers from a private company. The thesis is related to Master study at Roskilde University, Master in Education and Learning. Our case is created through three days of observations in prison and cookery school. We have in the light of these observations themed our observations and this thematization is used as basis for a focus group interview. Finally we have categorized our transcribed interview for the analysis. Our conclusions are based on the inmates' statements and we have used Erving Goffman's book ASYLUMS as the theoretical framework of our assessments. Based on the fact, that we are the persons we are and the different approach we have to this field that we are researching, we will try to objectivize our own objectivity, also known as participating objectivation introduced by Pierre Bourdieu as a methodogical tool in relation to make this thesis “transparent”. We have during the whole project wanted to see the cookery school and institutionalization in the light of the inmates. We find that the study of vocational training in a closed prison in cooperation between a trade school and a prison with a teacher from a private company has been a unique opportunity to elucidate the institutional influence of the inmates in one of a brand new initiative. We also find that the institutionalization being in prison haven’t changed much since the social studies Erving Goffman made at the mental hospital in the 1950. The inmates still make an effort to adapt to the system the institution in relation to maintain a social role.
