The study aims to qualify the discussion that has taken place in and between Danish news media in some years, regarding the media coverage of the hpv vaccine and whether this was done properly or not. Critics say the media was to blame for creating a distorted impression of how imminent the danger from possible side effect to the vaccine really was, especially by putting way too much attention towards the few girls who claimed they had been suffering from severe side effects. Yet so far no studies have been conducted to see if this is actually the case and there for this study sets out to do so.
Using quantitative content analysis the study will compare the use of different source types and number of sources in two Danish news media representing one tabloid and one omnibus online news paper. In extent it seeks to reveal whether there is a discrepancy between the way the two news media use sources in their texts about the hpv vaccine and the way the Journalistic ideals regarding sources describes it.
Sources in both media were dominated by interested parties, closely followed by expert sources but this is to be expected in a case of conflict revolving around a vaccine in a national children's health programme. The hypothesis that there would be few and skewed sources was overall not supported. The expectation that there would be an over representation of the girls claiming to suffer from side effects was also not supported.
Politiken.dk did overall have more sources than BT.dk, even though BT.dk had more articles, but beyond that there was no outspoken differences between the source use in the two media.
The study did not find any solid proof of the media using more or less of any of the source types og subgroups than is expected within the ideals. This however is somewhat tainted by the fact, that the content analysis suffers from some reliability and replicability issues that prevents too much emphasis being put on its outcome. Furthermore more studies in the qualitative range will be necessary to fully determine whether the media did a good job on the coverage or not.
