Cancer is a complicated disease to treat, because of its ability to mutate and spread uncontrollably. The immune system is our defense against harmful microbes that intrude our body. Normally we fight these through our innate and adaptive immune system. Because of all the defense mechanisms in the cancer cell, the immune system cannot combat the cancer. Chemotherapy is one of the most popular treatments used to fight cancer. It is an effective treatment, but a lot of side effect follows, from the chemotherapeutic drugs, which affect the sick cells a well as the healthy cells. As an alternative to chemotherapy, we have examined a new type of cancer treatment called immunotherapy. This treatment is used to activate the immune system and make it fight the cancer. We have, through intensive literature studies, examined if it is possible to get fewer side effects by using immunotherapy instead of chemotherapy. We have concluded that immunotherapy is less effective than chemotherapy, but because there are fewer severe side effects, further development can lead to a better treatment in the future.
