This study contains an examination of categorization of gender, and how the subject is influenced by categories. The examination is based on the Danish documentary series “Når 2 køn ikke er nok” which shows the consequences and difficulties transgender people are faced within the postmodern society, where certain discourses and normative understandings of sex and gender dominate. These problems are investigated through the theories by Sara Ahmed and Dorthe Staunæs and their understanding of the subject. Staunæs is inspired by Foucault’s notion about subjectification where the subject is formed through different contexts. The subject is formed through different discourses and social practices. Furthermore we use Staunæs’ view of the positioning theory from Davis and Harré to explain how the subject, through the use of words and discourses, create positions in which the subject take place or is positioned by others. In this paper Ahmed will represent an understanding of the subject where it is placed between the society and a stabile subject. With these theories and understandings of the subject in mind, we have learned that the relations are a main factor. Through the categorizations and the normative understanding of gender, the subject can get a feeling of being limited in its actions because they are placed out the normative frame. It is discussed whether gender is constructed and social, or if it is rather a question about biology. Based on the participants in the documentary it is concluded that there a many categories of gender, but the binary understanding of gender is still the dominating view in the post modern society.
