This project investigates how much grades affect the pupils’ motivation towards learning in the Danish high school. Does the motivation lie in learning itself or does it lie in the need to get good grades in order to advance to a specific university? Through an analysis of two interviews, based on three articles by Deci, Ryan and Vygotsky, we will try to illuminate what effects grades have on the pupils in the Danish high school. The project indicates that grades have a huge effect on the pupils’ motivation and way of learning. The extrinsic motivation in form of grades can be a good thing for some students as it motivates them further into immersing themselves into specific subjects. While the Danish grade system can demotivate others by not fulfilling their individual needs for intrinsic motivation (Self-determining theory).
