Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

For our third-semester project we have chosen to write a report on capitalism. Our selection of this topic stems from a collective desire to examine how the emergence of a new spirit within capitalism has precipitated a quite perceptible diminishing of the effectiveness and scope of the critical forces massed against it. That is to say, how the ideological effects associated with capitalism’s most recent redeployment have, in many respects, rendered the forces of critique powerless in their endeavours to hinder capitalism’s insatiable and amoral accumulation process, by furnishing it with the moral justifications it lacks. Ideological effects that furthermore appear to have curbed the ability of critical forces to formulate and articulate public dissatisfaction and indignation apropos of capitalism’s practices in the form of reasoned and comprehensive critiques. The establishment of such critiques in the public domain could be used to address, and potentially, resolve any number of the social injustices and inequalities capitalism’s redeployment has engendered on a global scale, postfinancial crisis. We have therefore chosen to examine, analyse and discuss the complex nature of the above-mentioned problematic regarding capitalism’s new spirit, post-financial crisis, by exploring the reciprocity of the relationship between its three constituent elements, namely; the accumulation process, ideology, and critique. In addition, we have chosen to localise this problematic within a Danish context. We have taken this decision on the basis of the fact that Denmark has also been affected by the global financial-crisis, and therefore has also been affected by the complexity of issues connected with the emergence of capitalism’s new spirit. In addition, by situating our – 4 – treatment of capitalism’s new spirit within a Danish context, we have afforded ourselves the opportunity of accomplishing our overriding goal in writing this project, which is, to lay the groundwork for the creation of a theoretical framework upon which the formation of a potential future critique of capitalism in Denmark can be based.
