The focus in this thesis is to identify the conditions in the field of The Danish Arts Council and furthermore the state of mind of the participants who are operating inside it. I’m interested in how political and bureaucratic changes in the structures of the field have affected the professional practice in the council during the last decade. My concern is to render visible which forms of symbolic capital and ideals that characterize this certain field. Terms and theories inspired by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu will represent the frame of reference in this study. This theoretical frame will also be used to capture which positions the agents occupy, and how they relate to their individual habitus. The conditions, identified in the field and among the agents, will be discussed using sociologist Axel Honneths theory of recognition. In this context, patterns of intersubjective recognition and denigration, discovered between the subjects, will constitute a parameter of a healthy or diseased field of research. This thesis is an integration of psychology and social science, which manifest itself in the combination of a field and an agent point of view, respectively. Thereby, the field aspect aims to clarify the objective structures in The Danish Arts Council in a more societal point of view, while the agent aspect is focused on the experiences of the individuals in the specific social space they are a part of. The primary empiric data is acquired through qualitative interviews with three different individuals from The Danish Arts Council, who functioned in the period from 2007 to 2011. Through these interviews I intend to unfold the informants’ personal lifeworlds and thus gain insight into their experiences of the field. The secondary empiric data consist of an evaluation report devised by the council’s members in the end of their appointed period. The aim of this report is to illustrate the patterns and structures of the field. Thereby, the secondary and primary empirical data will illuminate the structural configuration inside the field and the agents’ state of mind.
