This project is based on a cooperation with Bedre Psykiatri, which is the only organization in Denmark for relatives to people with a mental illness. In February 2012 the organization established a new initiative called København på Tværs the purpose of which is to clarify the different activities, which are offered to the relatives of mentally ill people in Copenhagen by the organization. The majority of the project's empirical data are gathered from interviews, meetings and activities with the organization’s staff and volunteers. This has given us a unique insight into the cooperation within Bedre Psykiatri. The aim of this project is to highlight which cooperative challenges and opportunities the new initiative holds and what is required for successful work with København på Tværs in the future. Through our examinations we have learned that in order to optimize the cooperation, the volunteers need to share the understanding of how they can benefit from the initiative. The volunteers and the local divisions are very different from each other, which can be an advantage in the cooperation. The new initiative can help them save resources by gathering tasks, but in order to achieve this, the volunteers need to get to know each other. All of the above can help Bedre Psykiatri strengthen and develop the cooperation within København på Tværs. Initially we had planned that strategic communication should be a central point in the project but we had to recognize that this could not be done in an organization which is primarily run by volunteers. Instead we have worked very practice-oriented and have focused on interpersonal communication and tried to get into a dialogue with those, who are involved in the initiative.
