Abstrakt

Our study follows the problem How does 18 to 30-year old Danes present themselves on Facebook and how does gender take part in this presentation? To answer this problem, we will by way of introduction clarify self presentation and gender theoretically. Next, with Facebook, its opportunities of interaction, and our theories as a starting point, we will conduct two interviews with selected informants as well as analyze their Facebook profiles. Then, we will compare our chosen theory with our empirical data to analyze if the conclusions match each other. Finally, we will connect our previous conclusions to the statements of our informants to get the most accurate answer. We can conclude that the interaction in our society as well as on Facebook is necessary to make sure that our target group can create and present their identity. They wish to distinguish between what is private and what can be displayed on Facebook. The informants want to stretch the truth through their hoped-for possible selves and present themselves as modern, active, social, and attractive individuals.
