IQ and Development

Studenteropgave: Bachelorprojekt

This project is written within the field of International Social Science. It sets out to test the hypothesis proposed by Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen, claiming that: “The five measures of the quality of human condition and their composite index (QHC) are positively correlated with national IQ” (Lynn & Vanhanen, 2006:101). If this hypothesis can be validated, it would mean that the higher score of national IQ a country has, the higher are their levels of quality of human conditions and economic development. To test this hypothesis this project will use other indicators of development such as the Human Development Report (HDR), Human Happiness Report (HHR) and’s level of democratisation. These indicators have been chosen as they measure upon more variables than compared to the QHC. We will draw from the theories of Anthony Giddens and his third way politics as a plausible alternative for measuring development. The analysis takes a comparative approach, which is done in this way as it thus can be measured if one country is better than the other. Furthermore, a discussion about how development is measured will be presented in this project. From the analysis it becomes apparent that the hypothesis from Lynn and Vanhanen, can be disproven. Other main findings of this report is: IQ is not a valid tool when measuring development, as it does fluctuate over time. Furthermore, IQ does not give any information about the current state of a country. Giddens can be used to offer another point of view on development, and his framework can be further expanded upon with the help of HDR. This makes it possible to measure if a country can be portrayed as developed, although there is no way to quantify the data yet. Development is a complex concept and is very hard to conceptualise and measure, as development means different things in different sections of the world. Measuring development also entails many problems, and many measurements will always gain critique from one ‘side’ of a school eg. economic, political or sociological.
