Insect pollination is something that all of us depend on. The priceless work that insect
pollinators carry out, is something that not only human beings benefit from, but represents
one of the most important foundations, on which ecosystems base their ability to thrive and
function optimally. In recent years, a tendency of increased bee mortality has been observed,
this both within wild and domesticated bee populations.
The aim of this project, is to examine how Danish orchard farmers identifies the insect
pollination concern, both present day and future, seen from the following three issues: Use of
agricultural pesticides, changes in pollinator habitats and climate changes. The main empirical
data collection method used was based on interviews. After these were conducted, all
interviews were analyzed using the methods of environmental ethics and the socioecological
resilience concept. As a result, the project showed that all the interviewed orchard farmers
make use of domesticated bees, particularly honeybees, as part of their production. None of
them are willing, to take the chance and depend exclusively on wild pollinators. A decline in
insect pollination was not observed by any of the participating informants, and none
expressed any concern regarding insect pollination in their fruit orchard, present time nor
future. Thus, the project could conclude, that lack of awareness among Danish orchard
farmers, is common regarding the insect pollination crisis. The project found no one single
cause of the observed decline, but most probably the combination of multiple factors must be
considered. Furthermore, it appears that decline in insect pollinators can result in low
resilience in ecosystems. The responsibility in restoring this, lays on all members of society.
