This project focusses on how the youth of Burma/Myanmar perceive the political changes which are occurring in their society. The project investigates how the concepts of youth and democracy can be applied to the Burmese context. This is done by applying Robert Dahl’s theory of democracy, Christian Welzel’s theory about democratization, Karl Mannheim’s theory of generations and Thomas Rochon’s theory about culture and change, to a series of qualitative interviews with different individuals identified as youth in Burma/Myanmar. This project has been able to conclude on the Burmese youth’s perception of the recent political changes as a democratization process, how they view their own role in the process of change occurring in Burma/Myanmar, and what the Burmese youth perceive to be significant about democracy and how it should be implemented in Burma/Myanmar.
