My project was aimed at explaining the reasons, which may be the basis for individuals’ association with gang-environments. In order to come up with an answer to my problem I chose to associate the project with a qualitative method that aims to nuance the study. I conducted two interviews with people who are gang-members based on an interview-guide that was used on the basis of my theoretical understanding. These people pointed out that they had experienced a failure from society, as they felt stigmatized because of their colour and behavioural difficulties. This stigmatization further led to a need for recognition, which, according to them, necessitated that they joined gangs wherein they felt that they were of equal worth. However, I also came to the conclusion that a general explanation for this phenomenon cannot be derived, as lack of recognition and stigmatization can also affect individuals in a positive direction. It can take the form of striving to be accepted, which can also lead to a successful life.
