The focus of the project is the possibility for creating a synergy between the environment and the economy in a manufacturing company. It is assumed that by promoting synergy it is possible to reduce the environmental impact and economic costs of a company. This fundamental assumption is based on Cleaner Production, which implies that integrating greater environmental concerns can have a direct positive impact on the bottom line. The empirical foundation of the project is constituted by the producing company NUNC and its generation of waste. First it is examined to what extent synergy is present at NUNC. The analysis is conducted on the basis of informants from the company and their remarks concerning the working procedures at NUNC. It is found that a series of organisational barriers exist that are hindering the unfolding of a greater integration of environmental concerns in the economical priorities of the company. These barriers find their roots in the company’s approach to the production process. The wish is to streamline and raise productivity through Lean oriented principles and tools. Furthermore, the existing potential for improvements by promoting the synergy and thereby reducing the amount of waste is examined. It is found that by reducing the amount of waste production to a level which seems in reach of the company it is possible for NUNC to reduce their input of raw materials and use of energy, which will have a positive impact on the economical as well as the environmental balance of the company. Finally it is analysed how NUNC can use our approach to promote this synergy, and a guidance is presented trough which NUNC will be capable of integrating environmental concerns in future optimisations of production. It is concluded that whereas NUNC is focused on productivity gains, an improved coordination with the environmental work in the company would prove beneficial. Elements from the Cleaner Production concept and the project’s synergy approach can relatively smoothly be integrated in the existing principles, methods and tools at work in the company.
