It has been in our interest to study how grades have an influence on pupils in the ninth grade especially with the focus on the pupil’s self-image, relations to each other, and the recognition processes there are present in a classroom. To examine this we decided to look at the issue in a local context, which is why we have collected qualitative interviews with all pupils in a ninth grade. We have been working with our thesis in a critical theoretical perspective and with inspiration from Axel Honneth’s recognition theory we have learned that pupils in the ninth grade are influenced by society’s expectations towards them. This also have an impact on their choice of education and furthermore on their tales about themself.
