This paper will study how relations are affecting children’s personal development at an orphanage in Chennai, India – more specifically the relations between the children, the children’s relation to the housemothers, and lastly the relation between the children and visitors. Here, data was collected at the orphanage Kaakkum Karangal in Chennai to get a realistic and authentic experience of how the everyday life at an orphanage is. To examine and understand the different relations and how/why they are essential for the children’s development, we have chosen to take starting point in the field of critical psychology. Here, we will prove and demonstrate the connection between the chosen theoretical approaches and let them complement us with knowledge so valid and thorough analytical –and concluding points can be performed. As a supplement to the chosen main theorist, Højholt, other relevant theoretical aspects from Stanek, Rygaard and Kampmann will be included in the analysis. These primary and secondary theorists are chosen since they each explain different aspects of the importance of relational bonds in children’s development. Following the analysis, a discussion of the analytical points will be performed to critically reflect upon our results and observations. We found the relational aspect of children’s development to be extremely complex and important – so when children are brought up in an orphanage, and are thereby not supplied with motherly and fatherly contact, they need a vary of other different kinds of stimuli, which in the case of the children at Kaakkum Karangal only have available to some extent.
