Household waste management in Copenhagen A solution for achievement of the EU’s recycling target

Abstrakt

The overall aim of this thesis is to identify the best solution for the Copenhagen’s household waste handling to achieve the recycling target of 45% and 50% in 2018 and 2022. Accordingly, the analyses in terms of recycling ratios and costs based on 3 household waste handling scenarios including the Renescience scenario, the Aikan scenario and the manure based biogas scenario are carried out. Among these scenarios, the Renescience scenario is in association with mixed collection of bio-waste in dagrenovation (1 stream collection system), while the Aikan and manure based biogas scenarios respond to source separation of bio-waste (2 stream collection system). The analyses and assessments of the 3 scenario show that source separation of bio-waste does not result in bigger economic costs than mixed collection of bio-waste. In fact, mixed collection of bio-waste with dagrenovation in combination with the Renescience technology for sorting the waste leads to much bigger investment and capital costs. In terms of bio-waste utilization, even though, the Renescience scenario has large amount of bio-waste utilization (90%), none of the bio-waste treatment by this technology is counted as recycling and therefore the result is low recycling ratio achievement in this scenario. For the Aikan and manure based biogas scenarios, the amount of bio-waste collected for recycling is lower than that of the Renescience (52%), but amount of bio-waste counted as recycling accounts for 47% and 40% of the total bio-waste generation. The high percentage of the bio-waste recycling together with high recycling percentage of other focused materials of glass, paper, metal, plastic and cardboard make recycling ratio of the Aikan and the manure based scenario much higher than that of the Renescience. Further assessments of the 3 scenarios also indicates that benefits of the Aikan and manure based biogas scenarios outweigh those of the Renescience scenario. Based on the analyses and assessments, the thesis suggests that the Copenhagen municipality should implement the Aikan scenario to comply with the recycling target. In order for the Aikan scenario to be successful implemented, sorting efficiencies of the focused fractions need to be increased to specific levels and sorting problem with apartment building with chutes needs to be solved.
