This study explores experiences of the cultural encounter taking place in selected Danish companies located in the South Korean capital of Seoul. The analysis takes its point of departure in the organisational culture within the compa-nies, and how it is perceived and experienced by different employees. Qualitative interviews make out the empirical foundation of the study, and Edgar Schein’s outline of organizational culture, as divided into three cultural levels and shaped by different cultural dimensions, serves as the general theoretical outline and basis for analysis. How so-called macro cultures influence organisational culture, is a vital point within this study. On that note, professor Lisbeth Clausen’s thoughts on cultural stereotypes are considered, as part of a closing discussion on the role and possible avoid-ance of stereotyping when exploring and dealing with cultural differences, which is what this study does. Ultimately the study finds that certain cultural dimensions related to the topics of relations, communication and what I have chosen to call work-life balance seem to heavily shape the experiences of the Danish-Korean cultural encounter within the companies. Also in ways that align with preexisting cultural stereotypes. These stereotypes however, regardless of how fundamental they might seem in basic cultural navigation, can only explain so much, and not account for the way new cultural norms and behavior evolve and grow as both Danish and South Korean staff become acquainted with cultural dynamics that challenge their own basic assumptions. All this happens within an intercultural setting that seems to be continuously negotiated, but also never reaches a point where a local and company-specific identity manifests and make cultural stereotypes obsolete. Looking forward, and based on the growing internationalization of society, not least within companies, it then also becomes interesting to explore how relevant it will be for companies to develop concrete ways to deal with intercultural circumstances. In order to ensure effective and rewarding cooperation in any kind of cultural encounter also, between Denmark and Korea, in the years to come.
