Abstract The goal of this project is to answer the following thesis statement: How does the use of smartphone have an influence on people’s face-to-face relation when being together with friends or family? In order to clarify my thesis statement I also ask the following questions: To which degree has my informant’s smartphones been integrated into their socials lives? What impact does the use of smartphones have on my informant experience of presence, when they are engaged in a face-to-face relation with either friends or family? My inspiration for writing this project is rooted in the fact that smartphones undeniably mean a lot for many people in, which has produced a series of critical articles that argue people are getting increasingly more attached to the digital world and subsequently more detached from the physical. I set out to answer the aforementioned thesis statement with a theoretical foundation based on social constructionism and Erving Goffman’s concepts of the territories of self.
