Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

The aim of the paper is to explore the challenges that occur when building an event from the term gesamtkunstwerk, where several artists meet in one overall and cohesive work of art. Our chosen venue was uKirke in Vesterbro, one of the many churches in Copenhagen, which has been closed and no longer serves its original purpose. One of our main goals was to investigate how the church could be reinterpreted through art. To secure the overall feel of the event and bring it together as a gesamtkunstwerk, twelve artists, working within different fields of art, were brought together to work under the same overall theme ‘Nature’. Furthermore we asked of the artists that they relate their work specifically to the site in question - the church. We used the method of observation as source to our primary data collection, which secured data for later analysis on audience behaviour and artistic spatial performativity. Furthermore, we used different models of analysis, such as Rune Gade’s udstillingsanalyse (exhibition analysis) and Michael Eigtved’s forestillingsanalyse (performance analysis), to investigate whether the collaboration between different art forms had successfully resulted in a gesamtkunstwerk opposed to several individual art pieces and performances. We have concluded that in order to turn our event into a gesamtkunstwerk, we had to create a frame for the artists to work within. Furthermore, we had to bring the event and the artworks together by creating an overall atmosphere in collaboration between the artists and us.
