Green Growth: Environmental Savior or Business Model

Studenteropgave: Bachelorprojekt

This Bachelor Thesis addresses the green growth policy process of South Korea, since it has in 2009 announced to strive towards a green economy. Thereby, the conflict consists in the contradictive terminology of green growth, consisting of green versus growth. The contradictive meaning of the ambivalent term is analyzed by approaching it discursively, taking discourses created by South Korea itself and the World Bank Group into consideration. These discourses are thereby fixed on the green growth strategy of South Korea and thereby other green growth projects are excluded. In order to show the ambivalence of this term, we take two specific theoretical perspectives as entry point, namely neoliberalism and ecologism, which each represent the two components of green growth. These perspectives are thereby pinpointed by the concept antagonism, which is provided by the discourse scholars Laclau and Mouffe. Through this multi-perspective approach to green growth we wish to understand the term more in detail and how it is being represented on several levels of discourse.
