This paper examines, by using a critical analytic approach, how the media’s presentation of economics and use of economic experts influence the democratic formation of opinion. The study exclusively focuses on the democratic opinion, which unfolds at the crossroads between citizens and media. To this examination Jürgen Habermas’ normative ideal as well as the deliberative de-mocracy model are included as essential parts of the critical analysis. It has its’ founda-tion in an interpretation of the group’s independently gathered empirical data, which consists of three focus group interviews. The project group concludes that the public debate about economic topics is not suffi-ciently characterized by open, free and equal possibilities for all to participate. The democratic formation of opinion is therefore made difficult and is challenged by the media’s presentation of economics.
