Abstrakt

We are investigating how the globalization process affects the mix of cultures and how this mix influences the Western perception of the East. Is this perception changing? We will describe what globalization is, according to Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens and Arjun Appadurai and we will show how the dimensions of globalization affect everyday life. We will use these scholars in order to analyse how globalization affects culture as well as the Western perception of the East. We are going to explore this perception using Edward Said’s book “Orientalism”, a 19th century text of Hans Christian Andersen and the movie “Fitna” from 2008 by Geert Wilders. We conclude that globalization and the movement of people create either greater cross-cultural understanding or re-nationalization and fear of others.
