Glemsel i Belgiens erindring af sin koloniale fortid i Congo-bassinet

Emil Niels Heinrichsen & Thomas Holmboe Bang

Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

In this project our aim is to investigate and make an assessment of the Belgian memory of their colonial past at the exhibition at The Royal Museum of Central Africa, Tervuren. We will examine this matter through theories about memory based on the formation of a national identity related to traumatized memory and victimization and through a study trip to this museum. What concerns us is how the museum in their representation of the colonial past tends to downplay the cruelties that took place throughout King Leopold II’s Congo Free State and Belgian Congo. Yet, compared to earlier exhibitions the present exhibition is more aware of their role as a representative of a former colonial ruler.
