This assignment provides an insight into the social problem known as the “generation gap”. The assignment assesses possible reasons and ways to solve the problem regarding different generation’s inability to communicate in modern day society. Studies show that the modern lifestyle of younger generations has resulted in a constant need for a quick pace and efficiency. Whether it is the smartphone or the quick access to information over the Internet. This progress in technology has caused the younger generation to communicate in a way that is considerably different from the older generation´s methods in communicating. The young generation relies on a constant connection to social media and the Internet in order to communicate with each other. The way communication used to be required some kind of social interaction. Whether it is going to the kiosk to acquire one´s newspaper or learning a skill from someone. This way of communication is now redundant because of the technology advancements in society. This lack of social interaction in everyday life, and the requirement to learn the mechanics of the technology advancements leaves the older generation in a labyrinth of bewildering information where they are supposed to navigate without the lifelong know-how the younger generation have grown up with. Our attention was mainly focused on narrowing the generation gap in today’s society. In order to do so, we used theory published by Steinar Kvale and Svend Brinkmann to acquire the best possible information regarding our qualitative method used in interviews with representatives from organizations belonging to the younger and the older generation. With this information in mind, we decided to create a mentor/mentee program for the young and older generation. The goal is to encourage communication between generations.
