Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project seeks to investigate the novel Gå by Tomas Espedal and its relationship with Romanticism, walking and the interactions between moving. The main character, Tomas, is a walker and we will analyze and discuss his persona, his thoughts regarding the Romantic Period and how he uses the Romantic writers and poets to describe his own journeys. There are many references in Gå to poets and writers from the Romantic Period – therefore the focus on this specific ism. Also, the whole concept of wandering, as opposed to taking the train, car, etc., is a great theme of the novel – we will therefore analyze and discuss why this particular phenomena is so important to Tomas and how we see it in the world around us. We use the theories and methods by Morten Nøjgaard and Annemette Hejlsted, to analyze how Espedal constructs the places and wanderings of the novel. Hejlsted is especially essential to understanding the structure and stories of the novel. To understand the intertextuality between Gå and the many Romantic authors, we use Malan Marnersdótirs methods about intertextuality. Through this analysis we will also discuss how Romanticism influences the novel. There is a significant relationship between Espedal, the novel and Romanticism. The novel is part of what seems to be a revival of Romanticism, with organic foods, sustainable, self-supplying living, slow living and other phenomenas being of immense popularity in societies all over the world. Wandering itself is growing in use – more people, religious as well as non-religious, go on pilgrimages, climb mountains in their spare time and all seek this connection and harmonious relationship with nature and themselves within. This exact idea, of being free and in balance, is the very essence of Romanticism and has inspired Espedal greatly in the making of Gå. Therefore, the project finds that there is a significant influence from Romanticism, on many aspects of the novel, as well as the character Tomas, for instance how Tomas interacts with wandering, his physical moving and how he perceives himself as well as the wanderings.
