This thesis examines how teachers can incorporate functional grammatical analysis as part of their grammar classes in Danish high schools (gymnasium), and it is therefore targeted at people with a special interest in high school education. The objective of this thesis is to bridge two main fields of study in Danish curriculum: linguistics and media studies. Throughout, this thesis attempts to show how functional grammar can be useful in high school education. Additionally, functional grammatical tools such as modality, presupposition and polyphony are introduced and applied in the analysis of the editorials, columns and political analyses. The analysis will demonstrate how a functional grammatical focus on political news articles can strengthen the students’ capacity for analytical observation, critical thinking and knowledge of the genres. Moreover, the thesis contains a didactic section, which provides inspiration on how to plan a high school unit on functional grammatical analysis of political news articles.
