Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project concerns the culture of fear in Denmark and the fear after the Copenhagen Shootings, February,2015. ConventionallytheDanishsocietyisdescribedwithahighdegreeoftrustbuttheproject argues that despite this one can still identify a culture of fear. Using several theories regarding the culture of fear, thefearitselfandsocialcohesiontheprojecttriestoexplainandcharacterizethecitizens’fear regarding terrorism and seeks to understand what kind of consequences this could have as an impact on the society. The project attempts to analyze this problem by first determining that there are indeed elements of the culture of fear in Denmark by invoking historical cases that either caused a significant amount of fear or demonstrating how legislators responded to the fear and as a result restricted the Danish people’s rights. The second part of the analysis concerns the fear of terror after the Copenhagen Shootings by employing data from focus groups to identify the respondents’ fears and classify it as liquid fear or moral panic and also determining whether they are willing to sacrifice their own rights to obtain the promise of security. The third part of the project discusses the consequences the respondents fear can have on society as a whole by determining the consequences the culture of fear can have as fear erodes trust and thereby weakens the social cohesion of the society. The project concludes based on the empirical evidence and the theoretical perspectives that the Danish society contains elements of the culture of fear. Next it concludes that the Cope nhagen Shootings have affected the Danish citizens’. They exhibit fear in which there can be identified elements of liquid fear and moral panic and as a result of that is willing to sacrifice rights to obtain security to a certain degree. Lastly that this can have consequences for the society and that the citizens are largely unconcerned regarding this development. In light of this the fear of the catastrophe can be said to have an even larger impact than the catastrophe itself.
